[A cut reed]
Cuneiform appeared in ancient Iraq in about 3000 BC, first as a simple pictographic
system, but rapidly evolving into a fluent means of recording language. The lines of
the script (called wedges) were pressed into the clay with a cut reed, used like a pen;
‘It looked a bit like a chopstick,’ explained Finkel.
