Porta Nuova

           Alongside the Royal Palace, Porta Nuovo was Palermo’s most important city gate.
           Erected in 1535, at the beginning of the road to Monreale, it commemorates Charles

           V’s Turkish exploits, with suitably grim, turbaned and moustachioed Moorish
           prisoners appearing as telamons along the western side.
