The Quattro Canti

           The Quattro Canti or “Four Corners” is the centre (if anywhere is) of the medieval
           town. Erected in 1611, this is not so much a piazza as a set of Baroque crossroads that
           divides central Palermo into quadrants. In each concave “corner” are tiers of statues –
           respectively a season, a king of Sicily and a patron of the city – where, in previous

           centuries, the heads of convicted rebels were hung from poles. Only a few steps from
           here lie some of Palermo’s most opulent piazzas and buildings, including several of
           the city’s most extraordinary churches.
