The Quattro Canti
The Quattro Canti or “Four Corners” is the centre (if anywhere is) of the medieval
town. Erected in 1611, this is not so much a piazza as a set of Baroque crossroads that
divides central Palermo into quadrants. In each concave “corner” are tiers of statues –
respectively a season, a king of Sicily and a patron of the city – where, in previous
centuries, the heads of convicted rebels were hung from poles. Only a few steps from
here lie some of Palermo’s most opulent piazzas and buildings, including several of
the city’s most extraordinary churches.
